SAY 'HAI' TO THE BEATS/ OF THE CREATURES

What's all the fuss about guitars, anyway? It's reasonable to conclude the soul of any band is in its rhythm section.

Rhythms imitate the most important functions of life - breathing, heartbeats, sex. Add to that a human voice and, really, what extra value can any other instrument bring? The Creatures - the breakaway twosome of drummer Budgie and vocalist Siouxsie Sioux, of Siouxsie and the Banshees - have turned their experimental vision to rhythms for their latest project, Hai (Japanese for Yes).

In the beginning, the beats create a savage maelstrom, and Siouxsie's voice is an uncertain interloper on opener Say Yes!

Siouxsie eventually tames the beat beast on Hai, slithering along to the bells on the mantra of Seven Tears and echoing through the buzz of a Godzilla! that softens and grows more feminine and melodic under her command.

Hai is focused and occasionally slow moving, and traditional rock fans will ache for their beloved guitar. However, a satisfied few will find their reward.
